MOVEMENTS
In order for you to get a better understanding of the world that "Hair" came out of, here's some contextualization of the movements of the time. As you're looking, think about how these movements have evolved in the past fifty years and most importantly, how they all intersect.

BLACK POWER
"Black Power was a revolutionary movement that occurred in the 1960s and 1970s. It emphasized racial pride, economic empowerment, and the creation of political and cultural institutions. During this era, there was a rise in the demand for black history courses, a greater embrace of African culture, and a spread of raw artistic expression displaying the realities of African Americans." - National Archives, African American History
ANTIWAR
While student protests seem like a natural part of life these days, they were uncommon until the 60s, when student protestors worldwide began to hold their government and educational institutions accountable. The event that prompted these (sometimes bloody) protests was the Vietnam War. While student protests were a large part of the Antiwar Movement, this was largely a movement that encompassed people of all demographics and backgrounds, all outraged at these seemingly endless and incredibly bloody war. More than 3 million people died in the duration of this war, one of the longest in our nation's history. 1967 saw a peaceful protest in NYC and then a more dramatic "Seige of the Pentagon." Never was a war more publically opposed in American history and the wide-spread public disgust worried political leaders.
